Light on the Hep C horizon?
I'm at my mom's place on the mountain (Ripshin Lake) and she was asking me about a new drug she had heard a report on that was showing good results. It's called Albuferon and is another form of Interferon. I couldn't find much on Medscape, but what I did find about an experimental drug astounded me. At the risk of running afoul of Reuters News Service, here's the report:
Vertex Says Investigational Drug Rapidly Suppresses Hepatitis C Virus

NEW YORK (Reuters) May 17 - Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. on Tuesday said half of hepatitis C patients taking its experimental drug VX-950 in an early-stage trial tested negative for the virus 14 days after beginning treatment.
The tiny U.S. biotechnology company said the patients received a 750-mg dose of the drug every 8 hours during the 2-week phase I trial.
Results of the 34-patient study, which was conducted among patients with the hardest-to-treat genotype 1 strain of the virus, were presented at the annual Digestive Disease Week scientific meeting being held in Chicago.
"The big surprise is that half of patients in 14 days in this drug group went below levels of virus detection," Vertex Chief Executive Officer Joshua Boger told Reuters.
By contrast, he said current two-drug treatments typically must be taken for 3 months before half of patients reach undetectable levels of the virus, and then must be taken another nine months to make sure the virus does not re-emerge.
Another patient in the Vertex-sponsored trial also tested negative for the virus after receiving a different dose of VX-950.
Detectable levels of hepatitis C returned in two of the five virus-negative patients a month after the Vertex trial concluded, but Boger said he is hopeful longer treatment in bigger future trials will prevent the virus from re-emerging after it is suppressed.

Haven't written to you before, so Hi, nice to meet you.
Thanks for the info about albuferon/vx950. It really does help to alleviate some of the anxiety about heading towards the end of treatment (well, 14 out of 48 weeks left to go and counting!). Fingers crossed for super new effective drugs! Oh, and by the way do you know about the stem cell research - go to bbc.co.uk and do a search if you haven't already found out about it. Something else positive for the future.

The VX950 looks better than the reports state. ALL of the patients (all genotype 1's) got a 2 log drop in virus levels in 48 hours!
Fingers crossesd this could be a breakthrough.

maximus-aurelius hep c pos since 1985 end of road for me , hope they hurry with vx950 tried all kwown and approved treaments even some natural stuff ,that worked better than the pharm. posions. licrice root worked well holding down viral load. i told my doctor im done with the kill me me to kill the desease game.that its just me and GOD FROM HERE ON ,UNTILL THEY COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW WITH GODS HELP AND BLESSING. I TRY TO KEEP THE FIATH...
It hurts me say that this product must be bullshit, tryand find any current info on it.
